Dance in the Bible: Worshiping God with Our Whole Selves

Dance is more than movement. At its best, dance can become an expression of joy, gratitude, worship, and praise.
Throughout Scripture, we see moments where God’s people respond to His goodness with music, singing, and dance. After the Israelites crossed the Red Sea and saw how the LORD had delivered them, Miriam led the women in worship:
“Miriam the prophetess, the sister of Aaron, took a tambourine in her hand; and all the women went out after her with tambourines and with dances.” ~Exodus 15:20
This was not dance for attention or performance. It was a joyful response to God’s faithfulness.
We also see King David dancing before the LORD as the ark of God was brought into Jerusalem:
“David danced before the LORD with all his might.” ~2 Samuel 6:14
David’s worship was wholehearted. He was not concerned with looking impressive. His movement came from a heart overflowing with praise.
The Psalms also invite God’s people to worship with dance:
“Let them praise his name in the dance! Let them sing praises to him with tambourine and harp!” ~Psalm 149:3
At Surrendered School of Dance, we believe dance is a beautiful gift from God. Like music, other arts, and spoken words, movement can be used to honor Him. Dance helps students grow in discipline, strength, creativity, confidence, and joy. More importantly, it can remind them that their whole lives, including their bodies, gifts, and talents, can be offered to God in praise.
When students learn with humility, work with excellence, encourage one another, and use their gifts in a way that honors God, dance becomes more than steps. It becomes a way to reflect His beauty.
Our hope is that every dancer who walks through our doors learns that they are wonderfully made, deeply loved, and invited to use their gifts for God’s glory.
“Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord, and not for men.” ~Colossians 3:23
